Choosing Your Rug

Your room sets the size, not a chart.

Every EC rug is shaped around your space, never the reverse. Width from 0.5m to 3.66m, length up to 6m, cut to the exact centimetre. Your room sets the brief, not a standard size chart. You bring the measurements, we bring the craftsmanship.

How to Measure

  1. Step 1. Measure the Room

    Wall to wall, including any alcoves.

  2. Step 2. Note Your Furniture

    Sofa, table or bed position and size.

  3. Step 3. Mark It Out

    Outline your size on the floor with painter's tape.

Trick of the Trade

Numbers on a page only take you so far. Tape the outline onto your floor, walk the room as you naturally would, leave it there overnight. It's in that quiet, lived in moment that you'll feel whether the size is truly right.

Finding the Right Fit

Living Room

The rug should anchor your seating, not sit apart from it.

  • Front legs on. The front legs of your sofa and chairs rest on the rug.
  • All legs on. A grounded, luxurious look for open plan living.
  • Design tip. Run the rug 30 to 40cm beyond your seating, framing the space.

Do. A living room rug sized so the front of the sofa and both armchairs rest on it, with the coffee table fully on the rug.
Do. A larger living room rug with the sofa, both armchairs and the coffee table sitting fully on it.
Don't. A living room rug too small to reach the seating, stranded under the coffee table on its own.
Don't. A round rug under a rectangular sofa and armchair group, leaving the ends of the sofa and both chairs off it.

Dining Room

Chairs should stay on the rug, even pulled right out.

  • Size generously. Extend 65 to 75cm past the table edge, all sides.
  • Why it matters. Nobody wants a chair leg catching mid sit down.

Do. A dining rug extending well past the table on every side, so all eight chairs stay on it.
Do. A round dining rug extending well past a round table, so all six chairs stay on it.
Don't. A dining rug too small for the table, with the chair backs hanging over the edge.
Don't. A round rug too small for a rectangular dining table, leaving the table corners and the chair backs off it.

Bedroom

Frame the bed generously, or keep it simple with runners either side.

  • Sizing up. The rug sits under the bottom two-thirds of the bed.
  • Stepping distance. Finish the rug 40cm from the base of the bed, so there's something soft underfoot when you get up.
  • Runners. A neat alternative placed alongside or at the foot of the bed.

Do. A queen bed with a bedside table either side, on a large rug running under the lower two-thirds of the bed.
Do. A queen bed and both bedside tables sitting fully on a large rug with an even, generous border.
Don't. An undersized rug reaching only the lower half of the bed.
Don't. A rectangular bed on a circular rug, with all four bed corners hanging off the curved edge.

Hallways & Entryways

Give movement room to breathe in transitional spaces.

  • Keep a border. Leave 30 to 45cm of bare floor between rug and wall.

Do you offer custom sizes?

Every rug in our range can be made to a custom size, so you’re never limited to standard sizes. Simply use our configurator tool to design your rug to the exact dimensions your space calls for.

Can I order a sample?

Seeing and feeling a rug in your own home makes all the difference, so your first three samples are free. Extra samples beyond that are $4.95 each, letting you compare as many shades and textures as you need before you commit.

How long will my rug take to arrive?

All rugs are made to order in Adelaide. Please allow two weeks for production and shipping.

Where are EC Rugs made?

EC Rugs are made at our Lonsdale, SA facility, right alongside the carpet we’re known for. Being Australian owned and Australian made means every rug gets the same hands-on care as the rest of our range, from fibre through to the finished piece.

How do I clean my rug?

Regular care goes a long way with your EC Rug. Vacuum it often to keep it looking its best, and if something spills, blot it straight away with a clean, dry cloth rather than rubbing it in, which can spread the mark or affect the fibres underneath. For day to day marks, our EC Cleaner is made to lift stains gently while protecting the rug’s appearance over time. Every few years, a professional clean will help keep it feeling fresh.
